Getting Married in Canada – Your Canada Wedding Officiant
If you are a Canadian, or have a Canadian connection through family or friends, or you just wanted to get married in that beautiful country, it’s easy.
The first thing to know is that a licensed officiant (celebrant) can marry you anywhere, any time in Canada AND, unlike in England, an officiant can do all the legalities and the creative part of the ceremony, so one fee does it all.
As well as being a celebrant in the UK, I’m licensed to do ceremonies in the province of Ontario, and can get a one-off licence to do a wedding anywhere else in Canada you may wish.
So if you’d like to have your wedding on a mountain, beside a lake or a waterfall, on a beach or in a forest, on a boat, in a garden, in a theatre or restaurant or art gallery, you can do it, no problem.
Wedding Ceremony - Cliveden House, Buckinghamshire, UK
Your script was beautiful and you adapted to the changes in occasion in regards to Xuan Xuan not being willing to bring the rings ever so gracefully.
Wedding Ceremony - Toronto, Canada and Norfolk, UK
Planning a wedding is tough enough. Trying to do it in a way that meaningfully and seamlessly blends two cultures, with different traditions, symbols, ceremonies and practices, should have been even tougher. But Catherine Kentridge was more than up to the task on our wedding day and throughout all the preparations leading up to it. Catherine is collaborative, warm, open, and speaks with so much heart. Thank you for being such an important part of our wedding.
Wedding Ceremony - Caswell House, Oxfordshire, UK
Our family and friends came from different countries and some do not speak English but Catherine conducted the ceremony in both English and Spanish simultaneously. She addressed the ceremony exactly as we had planned in previous meetings just as she had suggested. We were so lucky to have found Catherine, she’s bilingual and we found that is not easy to find in a celebrant in England able to speak Spanish. Thanks Catherine!
Wedding Cermeony - Amberley Castle, West Sussex
Catherine is more than a celebrant, she makes your special day more than special. We had a bilingual wedding thanks to her and it was very touching for my Brazilian Family to be included. It was friendly, intimate, full of love. You are very special and I would never forget our day, and you are part of those memories.
Canada Weddings – Things to Know
There are no residency requirements, so you can arrive in Toronto, not more than 90 days before you intend to get married, go to the nearest City Hall and obtain a Marriage Licence on the spot. For more details, visit this Settlement website, which will also tell you what you need to bring with you to City Hall to get your Marriage Licence.
This Licence is what you, the couple, I and two witnesses sign at your wedding ceremony, and I put the same information in my Marriage Register and that gets signed by the five of us as well.
Then, within 48 hours of your wedding ceremony, I post the Licence to Registrar General in Ontario, and you’re legally married.
You can apply for a Marriage Certificate 90 days after the ceremony. The Marriage Licence costs around £72.
A ceremony as unique as you are
In Canada, an officiant can create any kind of wedding ceremony you desire, with whatever words, rituals, customs, vows, readings, languages you want. You have your wedding exactly your way.
If you’re a same-sex couple, no problem, Canada was a pioneer in legalising same-sex marriages.
So come to Canada for a fabulous destination wedding in spring, summer, colourful autumn or spectacular winter.
